Chisos Basin Pano Bordered

Sunset on Casa Grande and the Chisos Mountains from Chisos Basin

This trip to Big Bend was taken May 9-13, 2013. Most of the photos were taken with a Nikon D300S and a Nikkor AF-S 18-200mm zoom lens. The nighttime shots were taken with a Nikkor AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8 zoom lens.

We were surprised by cool temperatures and even rain one afternoon and evening. Cloudy skies provided both opportunities and frustrations for photographs. New this year were attempts to photograph stars, the Milky Way in particular. On three mornings we left the motels at 4:15 am to be in position to shoot the sky at 5:00 am. On one morning, too many clouds intervened, another morning was plagued by poor technique, but the third morning yielded some nice shots.

A few flowers and cacti were blooming, and you can see the growing collection of Big Bend wildflowers here.
