March & November 2010

Pano Sierra Del Carmen 2010

Sunset on the Sierra del Carmen mountains

In 2010, we made two visits to Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park, the first from March 23-28, and later from November 17-20.

On the March trip, fellow photographer and mountain biker, Rick Capozza, and I spent 5 days in the area. We were able to get many of the photos by taking short hikes to the ideal spots. But the South Rim was a different story. It required a 6-1/2 mile one-way hike with a 2000-ft. elevation gain from the Chisos Basin. To avoid hiking in the dark and to get both sunrise and sunset shots we backpacked overnight, with each of us carrying 45-50 lb. packs. A lot of the weight was water and camera gear. The itinerary is below.

We rode our mountain bikes on the East Contrabando trail, Big Bend Ranch State Park. A few photos were taken on these rides using a Canon SureShot SD600 camera.

The second trip was made in November with Linda, and my cousin Bob Hettinger and his wife Wendy.

Almost all of the photos were taken with a Nikon D200 equipped with my Nikkor AF-S 18-200mm zoom lens.
