EastRim LostMineTrail Pano Bordered

Smoky East Rim of the Chisos Mountains at sunrise from Lost Mine Trail

This trip was from March 28-April 1, 2011, when Rick Capozza and I visited Big Bend. The scenery shots were taken with a Nikkor AF-S 18-200mm zoom lens, and the macro shots (most of the flowers) were taken with a Nikkor AF Micro 70-180mm lens.

Drought conditions have prevailed in the southwest for many months. Big Bend has had no rain since August, 2010. A few cacti were blooming but no wildflowers of note. Skies were smokey from range fires further north, especially on March 30, the day we took our early morning hike up Lost Mine Trail. Fortunately, the red Texas Claret-cup cactus blooms compensated nicely. And, despite the dryness, the ocotillo bloomed while we were there. You can see these on the Wildflowers page.
