Chisos Mountains at sunrise from Desert Mountain Overlook

The photos were taken May 23-25, 2012. A Nikon D200 and Nikkor AF-S 18-200mm zoom lens were used.

The drought in Big Bend continued. After a few light rains earlier in the spring, some of the plants were growing once again. But the effects of the lack of rain over the last couple of years were evident everywhere. Dead yucca, sotol, prickly pear and even creosote bushes are present throughout the park, and the madrone trees along the road to Chisos Basin are dying.

A few flowers and cacti were blooming, however, and you can see the growing collection of Big Bend wildflowers here.

The Rio Grande was running somewhat higher than in the fall, but not high enough for float trips. The skies were hazier than usual because of a very large fire in New Mexico. There had been enough rain to cause a little water to run over Cattail Falls.
