November 2018

Three of us (Terry, Lucas and I) from our Austin photography group visited Big Bend in early November. The weather wasn’t quite as cooperative as we would have liked with cold temperatures and hazy sunrises/sunsets most days. But we did get a few shots and found a new (old) place to eat that was pretty good, High Sierra in Terlingua.

Instead of the usual Far Flung Casitas where the others stayed, I decided to try a small camping trailer. I parked a rented Airstream Basecamp, big enough for one, for three nights in Lajitas and three at Study Butte. Parking at Lajitas made it convenient for a mountain bike ride on the Contrabando/Dome Trail loop in Big Bend Ranch State Park.

During the week, we explored more of Big Bend Ranch State Park, taking 4WD roads to the Crawford-Smith ranch house and a hike to Ceuva Largo. We also located another photo opp spot, Terlingua Abajo, a collection of dwelling ruins located in the National Park near Santa Elena.
