| Description | Habitat: Dry rocky slopes, lava beds, grasslands and woodlands, from 3,500-8,500 ft. Plant: Erect annual or perennial up to 20 inches tall; much-branched white-woolly stems. Leaves: Alternate, sessile, not decurrent, oblanceolate (lower) to broadly linear (upper), 3/4 to 4 inches long, white-woolly surfaces. Inflorescence: Open panicles of multiple clusters on branching stem tips, each with several small 1/4-long bud-like flowers; no petals; many overlapping, pearly white bracts; many small, yellow to brown disk florets. | Description | Habitat: Dry soils in grasslands, open areas in oak, pine, and juniper woodlands, along roadsides and disturbed sites; 4600 to 7100 ft. Plant: Erect annual 12 to 28 inches tall; stems densely-covered with fine-woolly hairs. Leaves: Alternate, narrowly lanceolate to nearly linear, 1-1/4 to 8 inches long and uo to 1/4-inch wide; bases decurrent, not clasping, up to 1/3-inch; flat or slightly revolute margins; surfaces covered with matted, silky hairs. Inflorescence: Terminal clusters of small heads in corymb-like arrays; no petals; many yellow to brown disk florets, 90-115 pistillate florets and 8 to 12 bisexual florets, surrounded by opaque white phyllaries.
