North Pacific Passage to Japan

Ocean Cruise from Vancouver to Tokyo via Alaska

Hubbard Glacier

From Glacier Bay we headed to the Hubbard Glacier, a massive, advancing glacier that extends 76 miles from its source to the coast. As an advancing glacier, Hubbell is constantly “calving” sending small icebergs, or growlers intot the bay. We arrived on Friday the 19th, and our ship stayed well-away from the the toe of the glacier. On a previous trip we were on in 2010 we were taken very close. According to Wikipedia, a cruise ship collided with a growler in 2022 and was damaged and now ships keep a distance.

The glacier is named for Gardiner Greene Hubbard, the founder of Bell Telephone (later AT&T), the founder of the National Geographic Society, etc.
