Otaru's Mt. Tengu

On the morning of our second day in Otaru, we visited Mt. Tengu, or Tenguyama. The mountain is just next to Otaru, about 20 minutes by bus from downtown. Access is by driving, hiking, or taking the “ropeway”, a cable car, which we did. The mountain is about 1750 ft. high and offers great views of Otaru and Ishikari Bay. There is some hiking there, gift shop, restaurant and a few amusements, but the main activity is skiing. There is a small museum devoted to the Tenguyama’s skiing heritage.
