Recess Cove

On Wednesday, December 13, we were at Recess Cove.

Recess Cove is on the Peninsula side of the Gerlache Strait in Charlotte Bay. It is the only place where we actually set foot on Antarctica proper, rather than on one of the many islands. It’s also the place where we saw the most whales.

We took a snowy Special Operations Boat ride in the morning and saw several humpback whales. Photography was challenging because of the low light, distance and snowfall.

Later, with more snow falling, Tom did a Zodiac landing. Another of the rules we were aware of is that no more than 100 people can be ashore at any one time. Staying below this limit was not a problem because of the way the ship had organized the landings.
