Avignon is located along the Rhône River, northwest of Marseilles. It was the seat of the papacy during most of the 14th century and is the site of the huge medieval Gothic Palais de Papes (Popes’ Palace).  Our day trip from St. Remy includes visitng the palace, the adjacent Catherdral of Avignon, and the Petit Palais Musée nearby, which houses a museum devoted to early Renaissance art.
