A couple days after the Alliance Schlumberger reunion, we took advantage of the pleasant weather and drove to Pamplona, about 1-1/2 hrs from our hotel in Bidania-Goaitz. We knew little about the city except for its fame for the Feast of St. Fermin and the running of the bulls, and that Ernest Hemingway spent time there. The two are related in that Hemingway's time in Pamplona resulted in his novel “The Sun Also Rises” which, along with the follow-on movie, resulted in Pamplona and the festival becoming internationally known and popular.
There is much more of interest in the city, including a charming old town, beautiful parks, and historic sites like the Pamplona Cathedral (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption) and the Plaza de Toros (bull ring).
Pamplona is the first large town on the eastern end of one of the main routes of the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago). We saw many people in town that were doing the hike/pilgrimage, or at least a portion of it. These included several people with backpacks in the cathedral.
